Join the staff of the Stanford Parkinson’s Community Outreach Program on Thursday, September 26 at 2pm (PT) for a virtual conversation with Barbara Sheklin Davis, author of “Advice from a Parkinson’s Wife: 20 Lessons Learned the Hard Way” (2019, 94 pages).
Despite the title, this book will be of interest to all caregivers — whether spouses or not, and whether caring for someone with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) or an atypical parkinsonism disorder. Some of the “lessons learned” are most applicable to caregivers coping with a family member with cognitive issues, even dementia. A few of the lessons are spouse-specific.
Barbara wrote “Advice from a Parkinson’s Wife” after more than two decades of caring for her husband with Parkinson’s. Her intent was to chronicle the serious matters that most Parkinson’s partners don’t like to talk about publicly, and the feelings and frustrations they are embarrassed to share. “Advice from a Parkinson’s Wife” offers practical suggestions for how to cope with the changes that caregivers experience.

Exclusively for the Stanford Parkinson’s community, Barbara will share her experience as a Parkinson’s caregiver and some of the more crucial information and tips that she learned along the way. Her presentation does NOT cover all the important thoughts and lessons in “Advice From a Parkinson’s Wife.” If you want them all, you’ll have to read the book.
