The Stanford Health Library is hosting an in-person film screening and discussion about “Boys of Summer: Short Stop,” directed by Robert David Cochrane, on Tuesday, February 10, 5:30pm. The movie, released in 2020, follows Dan Cochrane, diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD) in 2001, his son Robert, and Robert’s son Giuseppe in their summer travels. The film captures Dan’s community reach expanding while PD is closing in. If you haven’t seen the film or heard Robert speak in loving terms about his father, this is your chance! The conversation is sure to be full of laughter.
Boys of Summer: Short Stop shares joyful moments of Dan Cochrane in baseball stadiums including most valuable player treatment at Dodger Stadium, Petco Park, and the Oakland Coliseum. Robert brings his son, Giuseppe, into the adventure. They meet Hall of Famer and fellow Parkinsonian, Dave Parker, visit Rock Steady Boxing Headquarters, and get an inside look at the legendary Second City Theatre. These moments are contrasted with Dan’s struggles with losing pieces of himself and his independence, while having to accept support. The film explores what happens between the big moments, capturing quiet struggles, sudden falls, the value of improvisation, and the unspoken weight of time running out. In the midst of laughter and camaraderie, Dan’s son Robert questions if he’s pushing his father too far. Short Stop becomes a meditation on love, limits, and what it means to keep showing up.
Short Stop is the third in the Boys of Summer film series about Robert and his father. The fourth in the series will be premiering at the World Parkinson’s Congress in May in Phoenix.
