Parkinson’s disease (PD) affects approximately one million people in the U.S. and yet, so much about it is still misunderstood. 

That’s why we’re inviting you to test your knowledge below in our fact or fiction quiz. Click each statement (careful, some are fiction!) to uncover truth and understand more about this chronic disorder.

FACT or FICTION?


1) PD is a non-progressive neurological disorder that mostly affects movement, causing symptoms like memory loss, paralysis, and seizures.

FICTION!

The real fact is:
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder that primarily affects movement, causing symptoms like tremors, stiffness, and balance issues.


2) The exact cause of PD is unknown, but a combination of genetic and environmental factors may play a role. 

FACT!

The exact cause of Parkinson’s disease is unknown, but research suggests that a combination of genetic and environmental factors may contribute to its development.


3) PD symptoms develop rapidly and only affect motor skills. 

FICTION!

The real fact is: 
Symptoms typically develop slowly over time and may also include non-motor symptoms such as cognitive changes, anxiety, fatigue, and more.


4) PD typically only affects the older population, and leaves younger people unaffected.

FICTION!

The real fact is: 
While Parkinson’s disease (PD) is more common in people over 50 years old, approximately 10% of cases occur in individuals under 50, known as young onset PD.


5) PD is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s, affecting more than 10 million people worldwide. 

FACT!
