Webinar Notes: A Road map to the Future

Back in October, the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) welcomed Dr. Holly Shill to host a webinar providing perspectives to help viewers map out a future living with PD.  Holly Shill, MD is the director of the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center and Movement Disorder Program at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona.

Parkinson’s and Speech – Lecture Notes

On December 11th PMD Alliance hosted a webinar on Parkinson’s and Speech as part of the wHolistic series.  In this very informative hour CCC-SLP, Nicole Herndon, spoke about why speech changes occur with PD as well as treatment options and strategies for both the speaker and listener to improve communication.

“Parkinson’s and Driving (From a Caregiver’s Perspective)” – Lecture Notes

The Houston Area Parkinson’s Society (HAPS) hosted a day-long conference for caregivers in November. One of the lectures was presented by Christine Salinas, certified driver rehabilitation specialist in Houston. She discussed the biggest concerns around a person with Parkinson’s disease (PD) driving, as well as provided different techniques to evaluate if someone should continue driving or stop for their own safety. Although this conference was for caregivers, everyone in the PD community might be interested in these lecture notes.

“Hallucinations and REM Sleep Disorders in Parkinson’s Disease” – Lecture Notes

The Houston Area Parkinson’s Society (HAPS) hosted a day-long conference for caregivers. One of the lectures was presented by Joohi Jimenez-Shahed, MD, head of the movement disorders center at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She discussed REM sleep disorders, hallucinations, delusions, deliriums, etc. And she provided methods to improve healthy sleep for people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). (Though the talk was presented at a caregiver conference, there is nothing caregiver-specific about this talk).

How the Brain Progresses with PD – Webinar Notes

On November 5th PMD Alliance hosted a webinar on How the Brain Progresses with PD.  Neurologist Yasar Torres-Yaghi shared how the pathology of Parkinson’s disease begins in the gut, then progresses to the olfactory bulb before invading the entire brain. 

Although Parkinson’s is thought of as a movement disorder, as the pathology expands throughout the body it affects more than just movement.  Dr. Torres-Yaghi listed several non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s before focusing on common cognitive changes and the neurotransmitter deficits that contribute to them.
