Webinar Notes – Navigating the Road Ahead: Understanding Driving and Parkinson’s

During a recent Parkinson’s Foundation webinar Harvard’s Margaret O’Connor, PhD, an expert in driving assessments, spoke on the subject of driving and Parkinson’s. While the mechanical skill of driving (procedural memory) often holds up well, PD can impact the complex cognitive and physical abilities needed for safe driving.

One of the most powerful points Dr. O’Connor made was the importance of getting an objective evaluation rather than relying on guesswork or difficult family conversations alone.

New APDA Webpage For Those Newly-Diagnosed with PD

A Parkinson’s disease (PD) diagnosis can feel overwhelming — but you’re not alone.  The American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) has a new webpage designed specifically for those newly-diagnosed.  From expert guidance to supportive programs, the APDA gives you the basics you need now, with plenty more to explore when you’re ready.  The webpage includes top questions to ask your doctor, guidance on getting started with exercise (essential for everyone with PD!), and a curated video playlist.

Newsweek: Parkinson’s Disease Linked to Living Near Golf Courses—New Study

This article in “Newsweek” is about recent research that suggests that living within 1-3 miles of a golf course more than doubles one’s risk of developing Parkinson’s.  This is likely due to pesticide exposure in groundwater and air.  The risk declines 13% per mile beyond three miles.

This event, co-hosted with Brain Support Network and Stanford’s Movement Disorders Center, is for caregivers, partners, and family members who care for those with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), multiple system atrophy (MSA), or corticobasal degeneration (CBD). (CBD is also referred to as corticobasal syndrome, or CBS.)

This hybrid symposium – virtual and in-person on Stanford campus – runs from 10am to 3pm PT on Saturday, June 14, 2025.
