Dr. Michael Okun Addressing PD Prevention and PD Treatment at Three Local Venues, September 2025 – RSVP Now

September 4, 2025 By Parkinson's Community Help

Dr. Michael Okun

World-renowned Parkinson’s disease expert Dr. Michael Okun is on a national book tour, sharing the science, stories, and urgency behind The Parkinson’s Plan, his new bestseller.  Luckily, we have lined him up for three events in our local area — Palo Alto (Sept. 24), San Jose (Sept. 25), and Menlo Park (Sept. 25).  (The Belmont venue can no longer accommodate us so we have moved to Menlo Park.).  Dr. Okun will detail some of the 25 steps necessary to lower your risk of developing Parkinson’s and, if you have PD, slowing decline.  He will be in conversation with Stanford’s APDA Information & Referral Center Coordinator Robin Riddle.  Space is limited at each venue, and advance registration is required.  Read more about Dr. Okun’s talk and RSVP now.

Today, the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) announced 25 grants to support cutting-edge PD research for the 2025-2026 funding year, a 55% increase from last year.  The newly-funded research projects span a wide range of key areas in PD research, including the propagation and degradation of alpha-synuclein, synaptic lipid imbalances in synucleinopathies, and the identification of genetic and circuit-based therapeutic targets.  Congratulations to Stanford’s Gaurav Chattree, MD, who received the George C. Cotzias Fellowship, given to a young neurologist.  Dr. Chattree’s project focuses on novel therapeutic strategies for pathologic circuits in Parkinson’s.  This fellowship is named in honor of the scientist who had a critical role in developing Levodopa as a treatment for PD.

“Climate, Weather, & Parkinson’s Disease” – Webinar Notes

August 27, 2025 By Stanford Parkinson's Community Help

In July 2025, the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) hosted movement disorder specialist Dr. Eleni Okeanis Vaou for a discussion on how climate and extreme weather impact people living with Parkinson’s disease.  Dr. Vaou highlighted that rising global temperatures, heat waves, and severe cold aren’t just environmental concerns, they can also influence Parkinson’s symptoms, how well medications work, and a person’s overall well-being.  This webinar is part of the APDA’s “Dr. Gilbert Hosts” series.
