“Neurogenic Orthostatic Hypotension (nOH) and Parkinson’s” – Webinar notes

In mid-November the Davis Phinney Foundation hosted a webinar on Neurogenic Orthostatic Hypotension (nOH), or low blood pressure due to dysfunctioning of the autonomic nervous system, which is commonly experienced by people with Parkinson’s Disease, Lewy Body Dementia, and multiple system atrophy (MSA).

The speaker, movement disorders specialist Salima Brillman, explained what nOH is and shared lifestyle changes and medication treatments. Dr. Brillman answered questions from the moderator and listeners throughout the webinar. Read more to learn what Dr. Brillman emphasized.

“Mood and Emotional Dysregulation in Parkinson’s Disease” – Webinar notes

In early September 2022, Parkinson and Movement Disorder (PMD) Alliance hosted a webinar on mood and emotional dysregulation in Parkinson’s disease (PD) with neurodegenerative psychiatrist Dr. Greg Pontone.  The speaker discussed different mood syndromes such as depression, apathy, bipolar disorder, and pseudobulbar affect.  He described the syndromes in detail and addressed treatment.  These symptoms can occur at any stage of PD.

“Understanding bladder issues in PD” – APDA Webinar notes

In April 2022, the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) Massachusetts Chapter hosted a webinar with urologist Dr. Linda Ng on bladder issues in PD.  Dr. Ng identified common bladder symptoms, broken into two categories – storage and voiding.     She described quality-of-life impacts that bladder symptoms can have, including limiting physical activity, causing a loss of self esteem, limiting and planning travel around toilet accessibility, and absences from work. And Dr. Ng discussed potential behavioral, medical, and surgical solutions.  To treat bladder issues, Dr. Ng recommends visiting a urologist.

“Walk to the beat! How music can help your walking”- APDA webinar notes

In April 2022, the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) hosted a webinar on walking with music as a part of the “Let’s Keep Moving” series.  Physical therapist Dr. Tim Nordahl noted that audible cues can improve movement.  This is best and most easily done through the use of a metronome or music.  Dr. Nordahl addressed the benefits of walking with music for people with Parkinson’s Disease (PD), and different device options to be able to do so.
