Spotlight on the Ins and Outs of Telemedicine for Parkinson’s Disease Graphic

Telemedicine – visiting with your health care provider electronically, using a video conferencing service – was first widely used during the COVID-19 pandemic because people still needed to meet with their doctors but were advised to stay at home and limit in-person interactions. It turns out that PD is well-suited for telemedicine. But now that in-person appointments are available, when should you use virtual visits?  This topic is addressed in an upcoming webinar hosted by the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA).

“Assistive Devices for Daily Living” – Webinar Notes

On June 15 Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario (PSSO) hosted a webinar on Assistive Devices for Daily Living.  Two Master’s Students in the occupational therapy program at Western University were the speakers.  They began by explaining that the purpose of assistive devices and occupational therapy are to help people with limited or alternative abilities continue to do the task they need or want to do, whether that be self-care, employment/volunteering, or recreation.

Navigating Hospitalization with Parkinson’s – Webinar Notes

On June 2 PMD Alliance hosted a webinar with movement disorder specialist, Michael Okun, MD, about hospitalization and Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Okun listed specific actions you can take to ensure the best outcome possible, whether your hospitalization is planned or an emergency room visit.

Dealing with Gastrointestinal Issues in Parkinson’s – Webinar Notes

In March 2022, the Parkinson’s Community Los Angeles hosted a webinar on common gastrointestinal (GI) issues in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and treatment options with gastroenterologist Dr. Wael El-Nachef.  The speaker described gut issues including constipation, bloating, weight loss and malnutrition, poor absorption of medications, reflux, and difficulty swallowing.  Up to 80% of those with PD experience constipation.  The majority of those with PD experience two kinds of constipation.
