In July 2024, Parkinson Canada hosted a webinar on stress and Parkinson’s disease. The webinar featured guest speakers Kim Mortson and Dr. Rick Helmich.  Kim was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2018 and spoke about her experience managing stress and practicing gratitude.  Dr. Helmich, a movement disorder specialist in the Netherlands, focused on the effects of stress on Parkinson’s. The speakers offered practical advice for managing stress.

“Top Three Things I Learned as a Caregiver” – Discussion Notes

In early December 2023, Stanford Parkinson’s Community Outreach (med.stanford.edu/parkinsons) and Brain Support Network (brainsupportnetwork.org) co-hosted a discussion for caregivers to share the top three things they have learned about caregiving.  Caregivers offered advice to each other, including advice caregivers wished they could tell their younger selves.  

Participants in this discussion were members of local San Francisco Bay Area caregiver support groups run by Stanford and Brain Support Network.  Participants have experience caring for those with Parkinson’s disease, Lewy body dementia, progressive supranuclear palsy, multiple system atrophy, and corticobasal degeneration.  Very little of the advice was disease-specific.

In February 2022, the American Parkinson Disease Association’s (APDA) Virginia chapter hosted a webinar on neuropsychology with neuropsychologist Dr. Michael Shapiro. Dr. Shapiro discussed cognitive and psychological symptoms of PD. He described the neuropsychological evaluation process, testing, and possible treatments.

Taking research from the lab to our lives

In mid-February, the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) hosted a panel of researchers who gave updates on their areas of research and the value of research in Parkinson’s disease (PD).  Neurosurgeon Dr. Nicole Bentley and psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Weintraub reviewed deep brain stimulation techniques that improve cognitive symptoms.  Neurologist Dr. Mohammad Shahnawaz and movement disorder specialist Dr. David Standaert explored a blood test that can diagnose Parkinson’s disease.  Biochemist and person with PD Dr. Kevin McFarthing, explained the vital importance of PD research for those living with PD.
