In mid-February 2020, Alzheimer’s Orange County offered a webinar on senior care options, featuring speaker Nikki Barrett, a licensed social worker in Orange County. She discussed what levels of care are available, from in-home care to skilled nursing; coverage by Medicare versus Medi-Cal; and the costs that can be associated with each level of care. Though the webinar was not specifically about Parkinson’s Disease (or any disorder), we at Stanford Parkinson’s Community Outreach guessed that this would be valuable information for our community. Recently, ParkinsonTV offered a webinar on apathy in Parkinson’s disease, featuring a panel of speakers including two movement disorder specialists, a person with PD, and her wife, followed by a longer discussion with neurologist Mindy Bixby from Scripps Clinic. They discussed what apathy means and how it can be confused with depression, as well as some tips and strategies for living with apathy. In late January, the Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario offered a webinar on Advanced Therapies for Parkinson’s Disease (PD), featuring speaker Devin Hall, MD. She gave an overview of treatments that sometimes used for later-stage PD, such as Deep Brain Stimulation, apomorphine injections, and levodopa intestinal gel (Duopa), discussing their benefits and drawbacks.
