Stanford Parkinson’s Community Outreach is hosting a virtual “Connecting Through Art” (CTA) session for the local Bay Area Parkinson’s community on Friday, August 25, starting at 11am.  The 90-minute program is open to those with Parkinson’s and care partners.  This CTA program is free but advance registration is required as attendance is limited.  No artistic abilities are required.  And no fancy equipment is needed.  The facilitator is art therapist Christine Hirabayashi, PhD.  This program is sponsored by the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA).

The APDA’s “Connecting Through Art” program offers people with PD the space and ability to express feelings, emotions, and daily concerns through drawing and painting.  This gathering will provide a supportive and therapeutic environment that encourages participant reflection as you participate in art activities that help strengthen fine motor movements.

The APDA is the largest grassroots network dedicated to fighting Parkinson’s disease and works tirelessly to help the approximately one million with PD in the United States live life to the fullest in the face of this chronic, neurological disorder.   Read this APDA blog post about the value of art therapy and its “Connecting Through Art” signature program.

The facilitator Christine Hirabayashi, PhD, LMFT, ATR-BC, is a board-certified art therapist and marriage and family therapist.  Her doctorate is in art therapy.  In her private practice, she supports adults struggling with chronic medical conditions, loss, depression, and pain.

The Stanford-CTA program on August 25 is open to those living in the San Francisco Bay Area diagnosed with PD and their care partners.  When you register, you will be asked to confirm you live in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Participants do NOT need to purchase art supplies to participate.

At the end of the session, we will survey attendees to learn what frequency, day of the month, and time of day are preferred for future sessions.  We are aiming to offer the Stanford-CTA program on a monthly basis.
